This guide is for Windows users.

Don’t panic. Most pop-ups can be eliminated with a simple click of a button! All you should do is ignore whatever images come up and immediately look to the upper right corner of the pop-up window. There, you will find an X button. Click it and the pop-up should go away. If it doesn’t, or if more pop-ups take its place, keep reading.

Take care of pop-ups off the screen. Some pop-ups think they are clever and will spawn just off the screen, or sometimes even completely off the screen, denying you access to that ever-so-useful X button, but don’t worry. Look at the bar stretching across the bottom of the screen. You may have to move the mouse down towards the bottom to see it. This is called your task bar. Every window that is open can be accessed from this bar. Every button on the task bar is an open window. Simply locate the pop-up button on the task bar, then right-click your mouse over it, then select “Close” from the menu. The pop-up should disappear.

If the pop-up still remains after attempting the above method, then you’ll require more advanced techniques to rid yourself of the menace. Get the pop-up in front of everything so that the top bar is highlighted a different color. Most pop-ups come to the front, anyway. If yours doesn’t, click on the bar at the very top only. Then hold down the Altkey and press F4. This will execute a terminate command and close the pop-up for good.

Deal with “e-bombs”. An e-bomb is an e-mail or a pop-up that produces many more pop-ups. Numerous pop-ups will spawn uncontrollably, effectively overriding whatever you were doing. There are two ways to do this: the Task Manager and (this only works on Google Chrome) check the box next to, “Prevent this page from creating additional dialogues.” To call upon the Task Manager, hold the Ctrl key and the Alt key at the same time. While Ctrl and Alt are pressed down, then you must (and this is the tricky part) then press the Delete key. This will override everything that is currently being done and bring you to a menu. Click on “Start the Task Manager”.

Use the Task Manager. The Task Manager always takes priority over every other program and window open AND the power to stop them. There are two ways to end these pop-ups: the applications tab and the processes tab. The applications tab will let you close individual windows, similar to the taskbar technique. Skip this and go straight to the Processes tab. Here, you’ll find a list of running programs. Scroll through and search for a program called “iexplorer.exe”. Click this, then click “End Process”.

    • This will terminate the entire Internet Explorer program, including those demonic pop-ups.
    • If you’re not using Internet Explorer, then look for a process that represents the browser you are using, such as firefox.exe.
    • This is the most powerful weapon in your fight against pop-ups, but you will lose whatever you were working on, so as mentioned before, use as a last resort.
